The standard year has 52 weeks; at 40 hours a week that's 52 × 40 = 2,080 hours — the number payroll uses to convert salary to hourly. But almost nobody works 2,080 hours: subtract 10 vacation days and 11 federal holidays (21 days × 8 hours = 168 hours) and the real figure is about 1,912 hours across roughly 239 working days.
Why it matters: if you earn $60,000 and actually work 1,912 hours, your true earn rate is $31.38/hour — not the $28.85 the standard 2,080-hour math suggests. Freelancers pricing their time should use the real number.
